Melancholia is a delicate and usable sans serif font featuring an alternative font with swash style characters normally only used in calligraphy. The italic in melancholia is not a redrawn sloped version of the sans roman, but a sans based on ‘original italics’ such as Garamond. Altogether it makes up a subtle and beautiful typeface.
The word ‘melancholia’ perfectly describes that feeling of depression from being just a little too sensitive to the world. This font was an attempt to put some of that sensitivity into letterforms. We also experimented in this font with translating beautiful historic serif italics and calligraphic forms into a sans serif font.
